"Hypnotic Tango" by the German dance music project Master Blaster is one of the most famous examples of the early 2000s trend of revitalizing 1980s classics for modern dancefloors. The track heavily samples and interpolates the 1983 Italo disco synth-pop hit of the exact same name by the Italian group My Mine. By speeding up the tempo and adding a heavy, driving kick drum paired with aggressive "Hands Up" synthesizer riffs, producers Mike De Ville, Rico Bass, and Sascha van Holt created an explosive club anthem. It successfully introduced a whole new generation to the famously catchy, melancholic vocal hook of the original song.
Released in 2002 through Clubland Records (and widely distributed via Epic and Vale Music), Master Blaster's rendition became an absolute juggernaut on the European club circuit. It skyrocketed into the top 10 of the German Media Control Charts and became one of the most successful and defining dance singles of the year. Its massive popularity extended well beyond Germany, securing high chart positions in Austria, France, Switzerland, and the UK. The track's commercial dominance was so significant that it earned Master Blaster a prestigious German Echo Award nomination.
"Hypnotic Tango" firmly established Master Blaster's signature style, which they would continue to explore on their highly successful debut album, We Love Italo Disco.
